Twice a year Eugene Disc Golf Club members Jim Johnson and Matt Benotsch host fundraising tournaments for Food For Lane County, a local food bank providing food for the needy. The Ice Bowl and Food Toss are held about 6 months apart. The Ice Bowl takes place the day before the Super Bowl, usually in late January to early February, and the Food Toss happens in mid to late August. These dates can change so check here for details as they become available. The events are held at different locations, the Ice Bowl at Dexter Disc Golf Course and the Food Toss at Alton Baker Disc Golf Course. Tournament Directors Matt Benotsch (Ice Bowl) and Jim Johnson (Food Toss) have teamed up to run these tournaments and plan to throw amazing fun events and collect a staggering amount of food and cash for Food for Lane County (Click here to visit their Facebook page).

The following post is an update by Ice Bowl 2013 TD Matt Benotsch:
We had 129 people play in EDGC Ice Bowl 2013 and for the most part it seemed like everyone had a really good time. We gave away two baskets, over $400 in CTP prizes and over $1600 raffle prizes thanks to our generous sponsors.
I don’t have a weight on the food donation yet, but after counting the money a second time, we raised $3200 for FOOD For Lane County. With a donor matching all cash contributions to FFLC in February, the impact of our donation will be doubled to $6400, or enough for FFLC to provide 19,200 meals. That is something that we all can be proud of. I had really hoped to have some media coverage this year and help us raise the profile of disc golf in Eugene, and the Register Guard did agree to send a reporter out, but she cancelled on Friday morning. We will try again next year.
There is simply no way to pull off an event like this
without the dedicated help of many people and the support and participation of all the players.
Ralph Huntoon brought all the TC gear: the amplifier, mic, generator, heaters, tables, shelter, plus baskets and more stuff and had it all set up by 7 am and helped with other stuff throughout the day.
Jim Johnson designed and printed the awesome players booklet out of his own pocket, brought his rolling command center, computer and printer and handled registration, scores and everything else I threw at him throughout the day. Doing disc golf events for charity, specifically FFLC, was Jim’s brainchild which he started with the Food Toss in 2008 or so. It was Jim’s idea in 2011 to hold an Ice Bowl, and only his good sense prevented him from taking the lead in organizing it. I think these events are a very, very good thing for our club to do on many levels and we have Jim to thank.
Tobiah Moshier not only crawled out of his death bed to photograph the Ice Bowl and help with everything all day long, he also donated a massive amount of high quality prizes for the raffle, and provided me with encouragement and moral support throught the planning and execution of the event.
Cloud Pemble came out with me the day before to set-up the temp holes and tee signs, and again early the next day to set up baskets, distribute easter eggs, run the basket toss contest, break down the temp course and everything else we needed.
Rex Snellstrom joined me and Cloud on Friday setting things up and brought pizza for lunch. Rex helped with everything on Saturday, brought baskets, cookies, and other stuff and stayed until the bitter end, even taking a wayward disc golfers bag to Capella for safekeeping. Rex also donated $50 (and was rewarded with a float trip) and brought in a $100 donation from Capella Market.
Jesse Grasseth helped me design and test the temp holes, sold raffle tickets, brought dessert and helped with everything during the day.
Will Larson brought in sponsorship from several sponsors worth several hundred dollars, and helped me find others. He brought baskets and dessets, sold tickets, helped set up, and ran the basket toss contest. All with a baby just about ready to pop out and rock his world.
Jesse Everett’s baby did pop out (even though he didn’t tell me about it) and although he was otherwise occupied on Saturday his help making the map for the temp holes was invaluable and I’m still thankful for the help he gave me last year at the Ice Bowl when I was in way over my head.
Gene Fackler, Ian Goldberg, Erik Smith, Rebecca Duffy and many others helped throughout the set up, with sponsorship and/or during the Ice Bowl as well. My apologies if I left anyone out, rest assured I appreciate anything you did to help.
My heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the Ice Bowl a success. We had great weather, raised a lot of money, and my wife did not divorce me! I will turn in the final report with receipts and totals at the meeting tomorrow if anyone wants to see it.
